De-cluttering & Organization 101
Here are some basic tips from a mom to your family! One great way to begin organizing your home is by de-cluttering. I follow this rule of thumb: if I am not planning on using an item within the next two years, I'll pitch it. There is a saying I follow that goes in conjunction with this, which is: a place for everything, and everything in its place. If you plan on using something, you will always have a place for it. If you do not plan on using an item, it will just create clutter in the home. We need to remember that, in life, there are always sales, and we will most likely be collecting new things along the way -- so do not be so attached to something you are not sure you will find again. Chances are, after you pitch it, you will not be looking for it! And this contributes to a nice, clean, happy home!
Some excellent items you can use for organization are:
Drawer organizers. These are great for bathroom drawers, nightstands, and especially junk drawers! When things become compartmentalized, it is easier for you to decide whether something does or does not belong there, and it will be easier for you to pitch something that does not fit in the drawer. Socks and intimates drawers are an excellent example of a drawer that can benefit from some drawer organizers.
Tubs and Rubbermaid Containers are also a great way to organize items in the home. If you have newspapers or magazines that you like to keep, put them in a cute tub, and remember to go through them every week or so. Another great way to organize these contained spaces is to use ziplock or nylon bags for your smaller items. If you want to go "oober organizer," use a label maker to identify the general contents of the bags.
Roll your t-shirts. A great way to organize t-shirts for you and your children is to use drawer organizers, and to roll your t-shirts with the label of the shirt facing out. Not only does this identify the shirt easily, but it saves space and keeps the shirts wrinkle-free!
Wonder Hangers. My husband and I have used these hangers for years, and they REALLY help save on closet space! The concept is one regular hanger at the top with a sturdy plastic rod going down for 4 or 5 shirts to be hung on it. My closet space has AT LEAST tripled since using these -- they are worth checking out!
Clear plastic stackable tubs. Organizing sun tan lotions, medicines, vitamins, etc. under your bathroom cabinets can be easy to do by using clear plastic stackable tubs. This is especially helpful when you have quite a few items that can be seen through the tubs when something is needed right away. These are very inexpensive and can be found at The Container Store.
Galvanized tubs are a great way to organize cleaning items under the sink, or even beach items like goggles and play toys. If you need to organize your garage or tool shed, this is also a great way to do so with any items that may be lying around not stored in boxes!
